Packing Light During Cold Weather Hunts

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

In any part of the country fall hunting can be tricky to prepare for

A morning of beautiful weather can easily turn nasty when you're in the woods. But you may want to prepare for a full day out in the elements without taking the entire hunting closet.

Packing layers is the best way to prepare for any situation. Quality modern hunting clothing now makes it easier to go light while staying prepared for the worst.

It can be amazing how much body temperature drops following a hard hike into the honey hole. Investing in a lightweight down, fleece, or wool insulating layer may be all that you need to sit out that big critter waiting for dusk or dawn to set foot into your shooting lane.

Take a survival kit

Survival kits can be as small as a wallet and contain everything a guy needs to outlast the nastiest elements

Make sure you have a dedicated kit in every pack. Include a light and Firestarter compound. Keep a small compass in case the phone or gps battery dies. Even a piece of candy or gum can do wonders to lift the spirits when you have to sit out a long cold night on the mountain. These are just a few things that you can toss in, but be creative and make sure you don't forget water!

Water is critical, food is just nice

Lightweight water purification tablets or a bottle filter is another important item to always have, even when packing light. They don't take up much space and can make all the difference in surviving the elements of the woods. Keeping a few small snacks can help rejuvenate a tired body also, but water may be the difference between life and death.
